In a complex qualifying session with a premium on the ability to manage traffic, Calan Williams finished in P16. Lap times were once again incredibly close with the top 10 only seperated by 6 tenths, and with Calan sitting in 10th after this first run of tyres. On his second run, Calan improved his time however was compromised by traffic in the second sector.
There were differing approaches to strategy for the session, with the majority of teams opting for a 3 run plan. With Jenzer on a 2 run program, Calan was often on a push lap whilst the majority were circulating slowly. That proved to be a large contributing factor to the traffic challenges he needed to navigate. That being said, 30 cars on a relatively short circuit is always going to be a difficult situation to get right.
Earlier in the day in fine and warm conditions, the single practice session of the weekend was held. With the entire field starting on used tyres carried over from the last round in Austria, Calan's pace was strong setting several purple sectors and sitting comfortably inside the top 5.
With around 10 minutes to run in the session, the entire field went out for a final push with the majoity on new tyres. Encountering traffic early in this run, Calan backed off and elected to preserve his tyres for the racing to come.
