Calan Williams has secured his first F2 Championship points with a P5 finish in the Saturday Sprint Race. At the start of the race Calan got away extremely well on the medium tyre taking P2 into turn 1. From here he and Hauger pulled away to be more than a second from P3 when the first safety car was called. Calan made a good restart and held position in P2 until a second safety car was sent out as a result of an incident between Doohan and Sargeant further behind on the restart. In a pit wall communication error, Hauger entered the pit lane whilst closed and as such in bizarre circumstances gave the lead to Calan. |
Jake Hughes behind in P2 was on the soft tyre, and was always going to be very difficult to keep behind having been able to cool those tyres down during the lengthy safety car period. At the restart he took Calan around the outside of turn 1 and with Calan out of position he could not prevent Lawson getting through.
In the end Calan would finish P5 behind Vips and Drugovich.
Still in only his second Formula 2 event, this is an exceptionally strong finish for Calan with valuable points in the Championship.
Calan will start the Feature Race tomorrow from P7.
