Calan Williams and Trident Motorsport have completed a successful program for the 3 days of FIA Formula 2 official testing in Bahrain.
After an impressive qualifying simulation on Day 1, the focus shifted to race run simulations for the first session on Day 2. In very hot conditions of 35 degrees air temp, Calan completed 43 laps of long runs with a varied fuel load as the team gathered valuable information.
In the evening session Calan's pace was strong on the first two new sets of tyres which were the harder compound. After completing each of these runs he was in the top 5, with that position not dropping out of the top 10 whilst spending time in the pits suggesting strong outright pace. Still adapting to the level of grip in the softer tyre meant that his first sector on the final run in the soft was down, but this is part of the process which must be worked through to adapt to the two compounds used in F2.
On the final day, the focus was once again on race simulations, and this time a full feature length race was simulated including the pit stop. Once again valuable learning on the two compounds of tyre and pit stop technique and strategy was completed. The race pace achieved was good, and a total of 40 laps were recorded by Calan.
Unfortunately a heavy sand storm meant that the final evening session was not possible, and through a lack of visibility this needed to be cancelled.
Round 1 of the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship will commence at Bahrain March 18 - 20.
