Calan Williams and co-driver Sam De Haan have executed a sensational victory in Race 2 at Hockenheim.
Sam qualified the car for Race 2, and on this occasion this didn't progress as planned qualfying P6 in class and P23 on the grid overall. Using the aggressive strategy which Calan used Saturday running 2 sets of new tyres required a one chance, one lap delivery. Unfortunately, traffic did not favour well for Sam on his crucial lap.
In the race itself, Sam got off to a strong start making up places off the line, and then a few more as lap 1 progressed. Once he settled in to the race his pace was very good and he made some excellent moves around the outside of turn 2 to gain further positions.
Coming in early to go for the undercut, Sam had the car up to and impressive P14 from the P23 start.
The team executed a great pit stop and then Calan commenced his stint immediately exceptionally quick. Through these initial outlaps on the new tyres they successfully “undercut” 4 cars to now be in P10.
From there he continued the strong pace to be the quickest on circuit. Making strong passes he moved up to P6 and was 4.3 seconds behind Jules Gounon.
He run down this gap in 5 to 6 laps and was clearly able to challenge to pass, but being 11 secs ahead of the car behind, and now a long way in the lead in class, the team instructed him to hold position.
With an eventual P1 in class and another top 5 outright, Calan and Sam now hold a huge 29.5 point lead in the Championship.
