Magnificent Display in the Wet

Calan Williams Racing in the rain

Once again Calan has delivered an outstanding performance in wet and challenging conditions.

After the misfortune of Race 1, Calan would start Sunday's Race 2 from P29 on the grid, so far back that at the Hungaroring this grid position is lightly around the final corner. Once again conditions were wet, though prior to the formation lap it was drying, so there was the slight temptation to gamble with an aggresive slick tyre strategy. Whilst driving around to the grid however, the rain started to fall again, so wet tyres was the only choice to be made.

After a reasonable get away from the line Calan positioned the car well into turn 1 and made two positions around the outside. His tyres were pressured anticipating a track which would dry quickly, however the rain started to increase, so the early laps were very much about holding position to enable the tyres to come up to temperature.

By mid race Calan had gained another 3 positions to be in P24, and by now was one of the quickest on track lapping faster than all but the leader of the race whow had the benefit of a clear circuit in the difficult conditions and spray from cars ahead.

Over coming laps Calan would quickly gain further positions including a decisive moves on Zendeli and Ollie Caldwell into turn 2 to move into P18 with 3 laps to go. In the following lap he would gain two further positions and then a late safety car would end the race and leave Calan to finish in P15, an incredible gain of 14 places from his starting position.

A fantastic performance, especially considering the difficult conditions let alone the notoriously difficult overtaking nature of the Hungaroring.

The FIA Formula 3 Championship will now take a one week break, before heading to Silverstone for two consecutive events at the famour circuit.
