With the issues all over the world at the moment with the COVID – 19 virus, obviously nearly everyone has a great deal of challenges to deal with and work through. I desperately want to get the 2020 racing season underway, however there are much more important things for us all to focus on at the moment, and of course everyone’s health and safety is the most important thing.
I had travelled to the UK where I was to be for a few days before continuing on to Bahrain for Round 1, however it was during this time that our season start was delayed, and also soon after that Switzerland went into very tight restrictions in regard to movement. With both Italy and France in lockdown, we decided that the best thing to do at this time was to stay in the UK with my girlfriend Lorna and her family who have been kind enough to put me up.
In the UK I can focus on my training, and still be nearby to Switzerland to get back to the team once things return to normal there where I obviously want to be working with my engineer and the simulator to be sharp and ready to go for the season.
So how do you approach a delay like this when months of preparation have gone into peaking for the start of the season? For me it is a combination of two things.
The first is to set myself new goals with my physical preparation. With this extra time I am not focusing on simply maintaining my fitness, but I am aiming to take it to a new level. Working with my trainer Adam Wills online (who is back in Perth), we are setting benchmarks and goals in specific areas to measure that I am aiming to improve even further. This will be a great source of confidence for me moving into Round 1 when we start.
The second is to maintain my freshness and ensure that whilst training hard I am keeping balance away from thinking about racing all the time. This is going to be critical, as one thing is for certain, the second half of this year is going to be action packed with racing around the world and travel! It is going to be so exciting, but I must be fresh, so this time is important.
I am so glad to have been accepted into Edith Cowan University to study my Bachelor in Computer Science, as this is perfect to give me another focus. In that regard, now is the time to get ahead, as once again, it is going to be a busy time for me later in the year.
Stay safe everyone, and I look forward to keeping you all posted as we work our way through a bizarre time, and then come out the other side to get stuck into racing!
