Calan Williams and Co-driver Sam De Haan have executed an incredible weekend with a Pole Position in Calan's qualifying and two class wins in each of the races.
Qualifying on the Friday night went very well. Calan delivered very good push laps on both sets of tyres, and ultimately set a 1:31.808 in the crucial final push lap which was a dominant Pole in class, and also good enough for P5 overall of the 35 cars.
Starting from there in Race 1 Calan got away well. Dries Vanthoor had qualified P6, and he managed to push through into turn 1 and 2, though this would have been difficult to argue too much about given the team situation. From there his pace was outstanding and once again the team elected for Calan to go for the more difficult “overcut”, completing additional laps before pitting for the compulsory driver change.
On old tyres and now in clean air he put in incredible laps, and upon completion of the driver change, they emerged in P4 overall.
Sam then delivered a solid stint to bring the car home P1 in class (by a huge margin), and P6 overall.
Race 2 was Sam’s turn to start from where he qualified P2 in class and P16 overall. He did a very good job holding that position and was 6 secs back from P1 in class when they went for an early driver change, going for the “undercut”.
This time Calan’s job was to execute quick laps on the cool new tyres to try and jump the position and as a result of this and a very fast pitstop by the team, P1 emerged from their pitstop only just ahead of Calan. Within a lap, Calan made a strong move to take the lead and started to pull away.
Though the race he made his way up to P10 overall and caught the back of P9.
It was a near perfect weekend for WRT, with the Pole Position and two wins for Calan and Sam, and cars 32 and 46 both achieving a Pole Position and win (and podium finishes in the other race).
Calan now heads to Spa for the official testing ahead of the 24 Hours of Spa.
