Under fine conditions, the first day of official pre season testing for the 2021 FIA Formula 3 Championship was held at Barcelona.
Calan was immediately on the pace sitting on top of the timesheets at both the 1 hour and 2 hour marks of the 3 hour first session. Putting together personal bests in all 3 sectors of his new tyre push laps on all but one occasion when impacted by traffic, Calan finished P3 of the 30 drivers with a 1:32.5.
Returning to the circuit for the afternoon session, Calan again spent the entire first two hours in either P1 or P2. With the track temperature warm for this time, most were on used tyre or longer race runs gathering important data.
With an hour to run, Calan and his Jenzer team pitted, as did most of the field. With 30 mins to go, the majority of the field returned to the circuit to commence new tyre runs, and during this time (while still remaining in the pits, Calan slipped to P16.
With less than 14 mins to run, Calan returned to the circuit with time for a single new tyre push lap. Once again Calan delievered, posted personal best for sectors 1 and 2 and a purple sector 3 (quickest of the field) for the 3rd sector. His time of 1:33.07 was good enough for P2, and narrowly missed P1 by 0.002 of a second.
The drivers and teams return to the circuit for Day 2 today.
