TITLE IN SIGHT FOR CALAN WILLIAMS

Calan Williams title insight

Needing 26 point to seal the 2017 Australian Formula 3 Premier Series, Day 1 was a successful day for Calan Williams at Queensland Raceway for Round 5.

The day commenced with his 5th Pole Position from the 5 Rounds with a lap time of 1:04.5, which is less than a second outside the current F3 lap record. Given conditions were very windy, there is optimism that this could be broken on the second day of racing should the wind stay away. The qualifying session was not without drama however, with Calan losing the car at the 200kph turn 1 in his final lap in a 360 degree spin before being able to continue on and bring the car back in to the pits.

Race 1 saw a good start from both Calan and his team mate Chris Gilmour, with the latter winning the race in to turn 1. Calan however was able to sit in the draft out of turn 2, and make the move stick under braking in to turn 3. From this point Calan extended his lead to take the win.

With a point for both Pole Position and fastest lap of Race 1, Calan took 14 points for the day now requiring 12 more to seal the title. A win in Race 2 would give Calan these 12 points.
