STRONG DAY 1 AT PHILLIP ISLAND

Calan Williams Racing at Phillip Island

A challenging but successful first day at Phillip Island for Calan Williams on the Saturday of Round 4 of the Australian Formula 3 Premier Series culminating with Pole Position ahead of the 3 races tomorrow.

Practice 1 was on a wet track which was not only Calan’s first experience of the iconic track, but also his first experience of an F3 in fully wet conditions with wet tyres. Calan relished the opportunity finishing the session quickest.

The track was almost entirely dry for the second practice run, allowing Calan to fully stretch out the Gilmour Racing Dallara F311 once again posting the fastest lap times for the session with a 1:27 in the very cold conditions.

Qualifying was very eventful, with a dry track for the first 2 to 3 laps before rain started spitting and steadily increasing throughout the session. A lap in the first part of the session was also impeded with an on track spin leading to a partially blocked track just beyond “Lukey Heights”.

Calan was able to post another 1:27 and some consistent laps early before the track deteriorated in traction (particularly) on the last corner, which was quick enough to take his 4th from 4 Pole Positions for the 2017 Series.
