Over the past month I have had two sessions in the Formula Ford. Over the two sessions I have gained a total of four seconds. I have continued on the full track, in a car which is the same model as mine. My car isn’t quite ready at the moment because Fastlane have been quite busy at the moment setting up other cars for their first race. In the first session I did a 1:05, a three second improvement from my previous session. For comparison, a competitive time is a low 1:03 and 1:02. In this session, I massively improved my braking, by pushing the brake pedal harder at the start, and then slowly releasing it toward the end. I needed to work on still braking a little harder, and I also needed to work on carrying more speed on the entry to the corner. In the second session, I cut my lap time by almost a second, setting a 1:04. In this session I improved my braking and corner entry speed, but I still have a lot of room for improvement. I also need to work on speeding up my upshifts, and when I get that, I hopefully will learn to upshift even faster, without the clutch! I was also lucky enough to have the opportunity to meet with Gilmour Racing, an Australian Formula 3 team, and get a feel for the atmosphere of a Formula 3 race. I met with Errol and Jenny, the owners of the team. They were great, and didn’t hesitate to answer any questions I had. I also met their two drivers, Luke and Jon, who explained to me how the gearbox works, and what it’s like to drive a Formula 3 car. The experience was absolutely fantastic, and I learnt a lot from it!
