Exciting news for Calan Williams this week as Gilmour Racing advised that he will be elevated to the number 1 Dallara F311 to contend for outright honours in the 2017 F3 Championship.

The 2011 spec car is the latest generation of Formula 3 available in Australia. The European Formula 3 Championship (the pinnacle of world Formula 3 racing) is contested with the latest generation, before these cars a shipped across the globe to run in national championships such as that in Australia.

The availability of 2015 Australian Formula 3 Champion, Jon Collins, to compete in the recent pre-championship event at Wakefield in the F311 with Calan in the F307 (2007 spec) gave the team the perfect opportunity to assess Calan’s abilities. Calan impressed when looking like he would take pole for the event, Jon took the top position in his last lap by the narrowest of margins, just 0.08 of a second.

“To say I was impressed with Calan at Wakefield is an understatement”, said Team Boss Errol Gilmour.

“We have the opportunity to put him straight into the 2011 car, and we are looking forward to working with Calan in our campaign for the outright Championship”.

“Calan has ambitions in the future to progress his racing overseas, and this will give him the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the most advanced and relevant equipment whilst in Australia”.

With no time to waste before Round 1 of the Championship at Winton mid April, Calan will this coming weekend head over to Brisbane to be fitted in his new car for the season.

“I am extremely grateful for the faith Errol and the team have shown in me, and I am incredibly excited about being able to drive the F311 car with the later downforce package”, said Calan.

“I can’t wait for Round 1, and with the best team and best car behind me I am firmly focused on competing for the title.”
