Once again cool but fine conditions for Qualifying and Race 2 on Sunday.
Qualifying started pretty well, and the balance of the car was very good for the first half of the session on the first set of tyres, and I was around P8 at the mid-point and confident to be able to push harder on the second set to move up into the top 5.
On the second set on my flying lap I managed personal bests in sector 1 and sector 2 and with only a couple of corners to go in the third sector I was on for a strong lap to be around P5. Unfortunately, another driver spun on the final corner and became stuck in the sandtrap meaning that the session was red flagged and I was unable to complete the lap. As a result my time of 1:49.8 put me on P11.
In the race I got away to a very good start gaining a position off the line to move up to P10, then through the Becketts/Maggots complex I was able to gain another, and then a further position soon after to move to P8. After positioning myself around the outside of the previous corner, I was then able to make a further position up the inside into the final chicane to put myself into P7 by the end of lap 1.
From here we were in a train of cars and I was pushing to be able to get into a position to make an attack on P6.
Midway through the race however, with 8 laps to go, I was to get my final piece of misfortune for the weekend. Suddenly I started to develop an issue with the clutch, or possibly the drive train, which meant that something was slipping in each gear affecting my acceleration out of the majority of corners. This meant that I was unable to maintain contact with those in front, and now without the tow from them, I was under considerable pressure from behind.
I was really pleased for these remaining laps to be able to be able to defend, and still also drive around the issue to be able to maintain a strong pace and keep myself ahead of the group and finish the race in that 7th place.
Overall it has been one of those weekends where a few things didn’t quite fall as we wanted them to, but I have proud of how we fought and managed to come away with another two finishes in the Championship Points to take that run to doing so for the last 7 races in a row now.
Thanks as always to Mick, Richard, Tom, Dave, Kaleb, Emma and all of the team at Fortec Motorsports for once again giving me an incredible car to drive.
Thank you to my team of investors in my racing back home, who as always I want to express my appreciation for every opportunity they give me to pursue my goals. It was especially nice to have Jim Walker and his son Bryce along to support me over the weekend. Thanks to all my sponsors Lazersafe, High Energy Service, Online Logistics Solutions, The Wealth Designers, Edith Cowan University, Grand Toyota, Fullworks Firesafety, Inspired Insurance Services, Signarama, Rvend, Walker Wayland, F45 Hillary’s and Trizone.
Once again, thank you to all the family and friends who made the trek to come and watch me race today, and joined us in the garage at the end of the day.
In less than two weeks time its off to Barcelona for Round 8, and really looking forward to the challenge of yet another amazing F1 circuit.
