In very exciting news, Calan Williams has been confirmed to commence testing with Gilmour Racing Australian Formula 3 team late November this year. Having just turned 16 this is a significant step forward in Calan’s career, and one which actually began during 2014 when he was racing in karts.
“We had been planning to race in the Junior Rotax Pro Tour over east in karts for 2015, however Karting Australia made some big changes to the class which made it clear that this would not be as beneficial for my racing career as it would have been”.
Calan had identified Formula 3 as a key target to reach in Australia so he decided to write to the teams to seek their advice on which path he should take.
“The advice I received was to get into racing cars as soon as possible which prompted the move into Formula Ford a year earlier than originally planned, which has turned out to be the best decision we could have made”.
Team Principal Errol Gilmour said,
“Gilmour Racing have been following Calan in motor sport from karts through to his present endeavour in Formula Ford”.
“We were so impressed with Calan’s approach and dedication we invited him to spend the weekend of the first round of the KUMHO Australian Driver’s Championship with us at Sandown early in 2015.”
“It was very evident early in the weekend that Calan had a very good understanding of motor racing and what it takes to win, along with a very disciplined attitude”.
“With the success he has already achieved he will go a long way in motorsport.”
Calan will now get his first taste behind the wheel of a Formula 3 car working with Errol and his team at Queensland Raceway.
Whilst excited about this opportunity, Calan remains focused on what is immediately before him competing in the WA Formula Ford Championship.
“I am obviously very excited to have the chance to show what I can do in a Formula 3 car and am very grateful for the opportunity. For now, I need to focus on preparing for my next race in the Formula Ford State Championship and continue to learn as much as I can working with Brett Lupton, and from the experience of the intense racing we’ve had every round this year”.
